Are you interested in the mining sector? Here’s how you can get started.

The Mining Review highlights that South Africa’s mining opportunities for 2026 are centred around critical minerals vital for the global energy transition. These include copper, lithium and cobalt, alongside a resurgence in gold.  Key opportunities lie in junior mining, exploration and technological advancements such as automated, sustainable and digitised mining operations.  Mining Weekly reports a positive outlook for 2026, with improved rail performance for coal chrome and manganese.

Here are the key opportunities for 2026:

- Critical Minerals & Energy Transition: There’s a high demand for and investment in minerals crucial for green energy. Brand South Africa is emphasising South Africa’s central role in this global transition.

- Junior Mining & Exploration: The Department of Mineral Resources has established a dedicated Junior Mining Exploration Fund, increasing activity and creating opportunities for new mineral discoveries.

- Gold and Underground Mining: New projects like the Qala Shallows Gold Mine in the Witwatersrand are beginning production, signalling a return to developing shallow specialised underground mines.

- Mining Technology & Services: The HSRC stresses the importance of modernisation through AI, automation and R&D. This offers opportunities for tech providers, as discussed in the Electra Mining Africa 2026 announcement.

• Regulatory and operational reform are underway. While the African Mining Online article emphasises the urgent need for policy changes, improvements in rail logistics and the introduction of a new mining licensing system are stabilising the sector.

• Investor interest is strong. The 2026 Agenda - Mining Indaba and Brand South Africa indicate a keen desire for partnerships between government and private sector to achieve sustainable mining.

Despite the weakness in the diamond market, the broader mining sector anticipates a strong year, as reported by Mining Weekly.
