Scholarships and Bursaries 2025

Hey there! The University offers a bunch of scholarships for students, and they’re all based on your academic performance.

Now, let’s talk about the funding rules for the Council scholarships and bursaries. Here’s what you need to know:

• All Council-funded scholarships and bursaries, whether they’re for undergrads or postgrads, will be cancelled and forfeited if a student deregisters for any reason.

• If you’re eligible for a University Council Scholarship or a Postgraduate Merit Award, but you’re also getting NSFAS funding, you won’t be getting any University funding. But don’t worry, the University award will still be on your academic transcripts.

• If you get multiple bursaries from Council funds that cover the same category of cost (like tuition fees), any extra amounts will be reversed.

• Each Council-funded bursary program has its own specific rules, so I’ve listed them below for your reference.

Oh, and one more thing: the maximum limit of funding for undergraduate students is R180,000. If you reach this limit with an external or a Faculty/School bursary, the Council funds will be reversed or reduced to meet the maximum limit. All University Council Funds are allocated by the end of March.

I’ve also included some external bursaries on this page, just in case you’re interested.

Hope this helps!

Hey there! I’m excited to share some information about the University Postgraduate Merit Award (PMA). This award is designed to help graduates like you finish your Honours, Masters, or PhD degrees by doing research or a mix of coursework and research. The best part? Tuition fees of up to R68,000 will be awarded to students who meet the eligibility criteria.

Now, here’s the important thing to know: this award is based solely on your academic merit and the availability of funds. It’s not a get-rich-quick scheme, but it can be a real game-changer for your academic journey.

Just a heads up, the Postgraduate Merit Award doesn’t fund all courses. All University Council Funds are allocated by the end of March, so it’s best to check the PMA Terms and Conditions for 2025 to get all the details.
